Bandura's Media Effects Theory
Bandura's Media Effects Theory
- he was a researcher who decided to set up an experiment where he placed children in a room with an adult and gave him some toys in particular a bobo doll. The adult was told to play with the doll in a rough manor. The adult would leave the room and the keep the cameras rolling and in every case the children would copy the adult and also play with the doll in a rough way by punishing and hitting it.
- This was done to prove if watching violent things made children violent.
- His theory is if we watch Media products we will model are behaviour on what we see.
- There is a few issues with the theory. Doing the experiment in a test/ experiment condition that wouldn't happen in real life, when children are put in a room with a camera and told to play with toys it is very different. They are going to act to please the adults or think what do they want to us to do.
- Flaw: perhaps children were just trying to please the researchers
- Flaw: the dolls aren't people
- Flaw: does being violent towards a toy really mean you would be violent to a real person?
- We need to think about media texts where people may copy the behaviour or things that happen in that product. We people tempted to use the language, violence in the product

The media can influence people directly- human values/
judgments and conduct can alter directly though media modeling.
Empirical evidence best supports direct influences rather than
alternative models of effect like: two step flow agenda setting, or media reflecting
existing audiences.

||
The media may influence directly or by social networks, so
people can be influenced by media network, so people can be influenced by
media messages without being exposed to them.
|
||
Different media have different effects. The ‘new’ media
offer opportunity for self- directness.

Behaviour that people might copy.
|
In Homeland, there is lots of violence such as torture and
murder that people might copy.
|
There is murder in the show as well as human trafficking
which people might copy.
|
The opinions of people might be effected if watching the
show. The show is extremely racist showing all terrorists to be Muslim and
Islamic. They make a big deal about a white army soldier being turned into
one of them. People may then start to believe all Muslims are terrorists
which is really not true.
|
There is less racism, however there are outsiders who are
not from Iceland that appear to be the baddies. The Lithuanian is the man
doing the human trafficking.
The girls that are being trafficked are a different race
also.
The Chinese want to build on the land causing disruption.
