NEA: Website

I will produce the front cover and contents pages for the first two editions of a new fashion magazine that I have called Oddity, as well as a working website for the magazine, launched by Bauer (Britain’s biggest magazine publisher). The website will include a homepage and one linked page and will be interactive to the audience with content.

Bauer publish a wide range of magazines such as heat, KISS, Empire, Take a Break and many more. Bauer’s only fashion magazine is Grazia. The target audience for Grazia is women aged 25-45. After looking at their existing magazines I can see there is a gap in the market for a fashion magazine targeted at a younger age group.

The main focus when producing the magazine and website to for it to appeal to the target audience. The target audience are culturally sophisticated, age 16-25 and class AB demographic. This means that they will appreciate aspects of art, which includes fashion, literature, film and music as they are culturally sophisticated and highly educated.

After researching fashion magazine front covers such as Dazed and I.D I have noticed prominent codes and conventions. The front covers and contents pages often have a very abstract image that is very creative and well thought out with meaning behind them, which I will also do. There is a lack of copy on them as the image is so prominent and the main feature so I will also follow these conventions. They both have consistent mastheads and typefaces/fonts, which I will also include in mine. They have used a masthead that can be easily identified. It will be used as visual branding for the magazine. Mine will read ‘Oddity’ which means a strange or peculiar person or thing. As the target audience are highly educated and appreciate aspects of art they may want to be different and stand out from the crowd, so it may appeal to them. As the magazine will have to appeal to the target audience I will use mise-en-scene, camera work and editing to get them to purchase the magazine. From researching fashion magazine codes and conventions I have noticed that they don’t use much copy but the cover lines that I do use will be relevant to the target audience, so they may include fashion topics related to today’s society and issues involving fashion, such as climate change. The main image is very important, it will be arty, creative and touch on topics that are relevant to the target audience. I will arrange the mise en scène to fit reflect this. The models on the front cover will be the same as the target audience making it relatable to them.

It is important to establish a brand identify which can be shown though continuity of design on the website and magazine front covers. Brand identity is important as it will keep the brand in the mind of potential customers. If the audience is happy with the magazine and website, a solid brand identity which is made though a consistent logo, key colours, typefaces, style of images and design system will help to build customer loyalty across the brand Oddity.

Bauer research

Who are Bauer?

Bauer are Britain's biggest magazine publisher..  The business became part of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately-owned media group, in 2008. It operates in 20 different countries including the UK and has over 11,000 employees world wide.

What UK magazines do they publish (fashion and others)?

They have many brand that reach over 23 million consumers in the UK alone. The brands include heat, KISS, Empire, TV Choice, Take a Break and many more. Grazia is one of their fashion magazines.

What are their values and ideology?

They say that it is harder to categorise audiences than it ever has been before, so they want to build strong cultural connections and draw people in together to what they really care about. They say their brands become the lens though which their audiences see the world.

They say their biggest value is “Our aim is to connect audiences with excellent content through our broad multi-touchpoint brand platforms. Wherever, whenever and however they want”

They say they want their content to be informing and entertaining • Fresh and surprising • Relentlessly relevant to the communities we inspire and connect with • Standing out from the competition & consistently better.

They say they want to work with people who are passionate about: • The product • Their team • Working hard • Beating the competition

They don't have a fashion magazine aimed at the age range 16-25 yet. The only fashion magazine they have is Grazia magazine which is aimed at 25-45 year olds that are of the same class. So when the 16-25 year olds row up they can move onto the Grazia magazine.

Target audience

A culturally sophisticated • 16-25  • Class AB demographic.

They will appreciate all aspects of art, which includes fashion, literature, film and music as they culturally sophisticated and highly educated. They are the younger generation who like to be diverse, and they are innovators who like to make their mark.
Most of them will have part time jobs as they are still in school, college or university but only some are unemployed or have full time jobs.
They are experiencers who are young, enthusiastic and impulsive. Variety, excitement and risk is what motivates the consumers. There main purchases are fashion merchandise, entertainment  and socialising.

08/05/18 L/O: to plan effective and creative content for a specific audience.

Initial design ideas

Titles for the new fashion magazine

Fad- This title is related to fashion greatly. The definition of fad is "especially one followed enthusiastically by a group." In relation to the target audience and the style of magazine it may seem that it is inappropriate as the target audience would not normally follow the crowd and are quite eccentric but if I wanted to change the genre it could fit equally.

Mania- the second title I came up with is Mania is means "excessive excitement or enthusiasm to a craze". The craze of fashion is a huge part of the target audiences lifestyle so this title is well fit.

Alter- The definition of Alter is "to make different in some particular, as size, style, course, or the like; modify. This is really relevant to the target audience and the style they are interested in, which is making things different and altering them/ changing them to make them unique.

Bespoke- "A bespoke piece of clothing refers to a garment made from scratch to fit a customer's specific measurements and requirements." I really like this title and would prefer to use is as my final title for the fashion magazine and I think that it it is very relevant to my target audience.

Oddity- "A strange or peculiar person or thing". I decided to go with Oddity as my final name for the fashion magazine. It was the most voted for in the target audience survey. This means that Oddity will be the most meaningful to the target audience, it will make them want to purchase the magazine, not only once but repeatedly as it is something they think will standout most and represent the brand as a whole. This title is something extremely relevant to the target audience. They are each unique individuals who love standing out from the crowd. They enjoy being peculiar and love and embrace anything that is out of place.

Typefaces
I used Fad as a sample title it is not my final choice. I really like the sans serif font because it appear more bold and out there just like the target audience. Sans serif will also be much easier to read which has a more physiological meaning behind it, because it is so easy to read it means that the buyer will also make quicker decisions about what the message reads and if they should buy it. However I do like the serif font 'The Blacklist' as it's more 'flowy' handwritten style is very original and not set in place. Sans serif is also seen as a more feminine font where Serif is generally more masculine. This could be helpful is deciding as more of my target audience are female. Women's fashion curves more elegant curves while men are more attracted to more angular typefaces.

Overview of my magazine

Values and representation: Originality is a big value for the magazine. The brand being original and expressing their creative ability and their independence is a huge part of what they believe in as well as being unique. Dreaming big and striving for excellence; the target audience and brand want to strive harder than you will normally do and will not settle for being just okay or in a comfort zone. Mental health an relevant issues of today is something the brand really does focus on as they like to see themselves as educated and socially aware.

Main images options for front cover

  • Close up photos, one of a boy one of a girl.
There will be group shots and individual shots of girls and maybe boys the age of 17. This age is in the middle of the target audiences age range so it would fit the most people. I want the photographs to  reflect the personality of the target audience and to represent the values of the brand, so the models will have quite serious expressions on their faces to show they don't care.
The photos will be quite low key lighting in areas. The photographs will come together more with the editing. The editing will be quite dramatic with a geometric theme.

Survey responses

The average age shown in the survey is 16-24. This is good as the age range in the brief is the same age range as the majority of people taking the survey. This means that the other answers in the survey are what the target audience will want to see in the magazine.

The majority of the people that took the survey are female. I will aim the magazine more at the female audience although I will also slightly males as the secondary audience.

Magazines are obviously not something that the people I have asked would buy, however using the other results in the survey I can suit the magazine to something that maybe would entice them to buy. I could also make the magazine more accessible, for example an online magazine.

I will make my magazine £3-£4 although the majority of people have voted £2-£3 it is very cheap and a lot of people would still buy the magazine if it was still a couple of pounds more.
