1 Analyse the different representation of ethnicity in sources A and B.
Apply one appropriate theory of representation in your answer.

I am going to analyse different representations of ethnicity in Source A and Source B, applying Gilroy's theory. Gilroy believes Britain that failed to mourn its loss of empire creating 'postcolonial melancholia', this has resulted in people in ethnic minorities and from places Britain colonised being represented as powerless, weak, dehumanised, marginalised and other. This is especially displayed in the media however some media products do disrupt Gilroy's theory. I am going to explore this further in Source A and B

The Independent newspaper does not confirm Gilroy's theory in Source A as it presents migrants in a more human light compared with the Daily Mail which strongly displays the notions outlined by Gilroy. For example, the representation of Ethnicity is being shown very negatively in the Daily Mail in the headline 'YOU PAY £36M FOR CALAIS CLEAROUT'. The Daily Mail is being very racist making readers feel as if they are personally paying for the migrants to leave the jungle. This racist statement is reinforced by cynical and sensationalist lexis such as 'chaos' to make readers ideas, values and opinions the same as the large conglomerates such as Lord Rothermere (the Daily Mails owner). This again supports Gilroy's theory as he believes white western people want to be shown as more powerful, successful and important.

The Independent on the other hand is a socialist paper that cares about humans. The headline in Source A in comparison to the Daily Mail is very supportive and emotive. 'Farewell, Jungle. Hello, uncertain future'. This is giving a very positive representation of the migrants creating sympathy for them. This is therefore not supporting Gilory's theory. Furthermore though not using capital letters and underlining it is disrupting Gilroy's theory.

The image used on The Independent is of an Ethiopian migrant looking sad and giving another person a hug. This is creating emotion for the reader making us feel sorry for them. On the Daily Mail's front cover we aren't shown any image. This is most likely because they do not have an image of migrants being disruptive or having a terroristic tendencies.

The Independent is a threat to the Daily Mail as they are proving the Daily Mail's racist story and views to be false.

2 Sources A and B cover the same news event but are from two different newspapers.

How far has the combination of elements of media language influenced meaning in the sources?

In your answer you must:

  • explain how the combination of elements of media language influences meaning in newspapers
  • analyse how the combination of elements
2 The Daily Mail and The Guardian cover the same news event but are from two different newspapers.
How far has the combination of elements of media language influenced  meaning in the sources?
analyse ho

I am going to look at the Daily Mail and The Guardian covers from the 28th of March 2019, this is the day before we left the EU, in regards to how media language has influenced meaning in them.

Both newspapers feature the same photograph of Theresa May, however they are portrayed in a different way. The Daily Mail photograph is taken from a lower angle connoting power and dominance and makes the viewer feel as if they are looking up to her as a superior being. It has also been cropped filtered and they have added a black background. The Guardian however has used a higher angle more level angle of Theresa May, connoting that she is more venerable and powerless. The photo has been left unedited giving it a more realistic look. The editing of the image on each image has completely changed its meaning. The newspapers have done this to reflect the opinion that the newspaper article is showing; The Guardian being more negative about Brexit and The Daily Mail making Theresa seem more heroic. Each newspaper different political bias which is therefore shown in the imagery used. The Daily Mail is very conservative, therefore supporting Theresa May and Brexit though the low angle and editing, and The Guardian being very liberal, they care a lot about people and want to remain in the EU.

The lexis on the front covers is again supporting the political bias of the newspaper, which could be influencing the audience to take their side of the story. The Daily Mail uses the word 'SACRIFICE' to talk about Theresa May's decisions of Brexit. Sacrifice makes her seem extremely noble, which is again reinforcing the pro-Brexit, conservative party. However The Guardian takes a different approach with the lexis and says' No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.' They stating honest facts (of how many no votes she got), by repeating the word 'No'. They are also staying true to sensationalism. Also, using repeating 'No' is reinforcing the fact the newspaper doesn't want to leave the EU.

The media language could influence the reader depending on the views, values and opinions that they read.

Explain the impact of technologies developments and changing economic contexts on the cost for audiences of consuming news. Refer to The Guardian and the Daily Mail to support your answer.
Media ownership influences the content of newspaper stories greatly, changes in technology have also changed the face of news and can impact the reliability of content. I am going to look at The Guardian and the Daily Mail to investigate this further in relation to the impact it has on the audience.

Media, especially news is very political due to the ownership of them. This creates bias in political views. The Daily Mail is owned by a billionaire called Lord Rotheremere who is a good friend of David Cameron and a strong conservative supporter. Rich people like Rotheremere like to own the media as they like to control people's opinions. They do this by having only a few people contribute to the newspaper content, this results in a lack of creativity as power, profit and influence is the main priority. This extremely supports Curran and Seaton's media industries theory. The internet has added a new dimension of bias, because audiences are no longer passive.

The invention of the internet has meant the relationship between the audience and the producers has changed dramatically. Audiences are no longer passive, they are now active. This means they are now able to share, comment and create there own content online. This has created problems for newspapers such as the Daily Mail and the Guardian that have online websites, Facebook and twitter pages as the audiences now expect to consume their news for free, so newspapers rely on advertising to make a profit.

Having news now online means that news can have influence over a wider range of audiences, however the predictable mass in now gone. The Daily Mail has has a narrow range of political opinions, with a bias pro capitalism, that is often very racist. An online news article from the Daily Mail stated that 'A Polish butcher arrested on suspicion of the abduction of missing student Libby Squire has been charged with a string of offences unrelated to the 21-year-old's disappearance.' There was no need to state his ethnicity and use it in a negative way, if the abductor was English they wouldn't have told us. Some audiences may be susceptible to believing and taking on ideologies themselves. So using racism in their news stories may be influencing the audience to also be racist.

Newspapers having to rely on advertising is having an impact on the quality of news.

Legalities- phone hacking, daily mail caught up in it pcc was scrapped, new regulation of press IPSO, lost trust of readers so they no longer trust news, to be competitive online they use click bait headlines

  • invention of the internet, meant the audeience can share, commetn and create, the relaitionship has changed the with the audeince and the producers
  • harder for newspapers to make any money becuase most news online is now free
  • fact checking
  • phone hacking changed media law

Explain the usefulness of one of the following theories in understanding the extent to which media ownership influences the content of new stories:

Or- Hesmondalgh on cultural industries
